Getting Your Results
Our expert team of radiologists prepare in-depth, accurate reports. They take care to highlight specific features of the imaging that are especially relevant to the clinical problem under investigation. If you need your patient's results sooner, we are happy to accomodate your needs. Please contact us to arrange this.
If you would like, one of our radiologists or a specialist GP can call you to personally discuss your patient’s results over the phone.
If you referred yourself for a scan, one of our radiologists or specialist GP's will be in touch to discuss your results. In some instances, the results of your scan can be discussed on the day.
Image Guided Injections
Before we begin, the consultant or nurse will ask you to complete a patient consent form.
During your injection either a CT or ultrasound scanner will be used to guide the injection into place. Over the course of the treatment you will be awake and will be able to speak freely with the nurse or consultant if you wish. How long does an image guided injection take?
Typically, an image guided injection takes around 30 minutes. Can I bring someone with me?
Yes, we prefer that you are accompanied by a friend or family member in order that they can drive you home after your appointment. Are there any side effects?
Image guided injections are generally very safe. However, as with any invasive procedure, there are slight risks involved. All risks will be discussed with you by the nurse or consultant before your procedure. What happens after an image guided injection? After your procedure you can get dressed. We will keep you in for observation for up to one hour after the procedure before your friend or family member can drive you home.
This information is also available on a downloadable patient information sheet. DEXA
DEXA is mainly used to investigate bone mineral density reduction caused by osteoporosis. By using two different X-ray sources rather than one, a DEXA greatly improves the accuracy in measuring the density of bone tissue. You may be advised to have a bone density scan if:
Our radiographer will take the time before your procedure to explain everything to you. During the scan, the radiographer will ask you to lie on a comfortable scanner bed while the scanner passes above you. DEXA is a very straightforward scan and causes no discomfort or pain.
The scan usually takes 10 to 15 minutes as it can take a few minutes to scan each bone. Appointments usually last approximately 40 minutes.
Yes, we are happy for a friend or family member to accompany you.
DEXA scans are safe. The DEXA scan only exposes your body to a miniscule quantity of X-ray radiation. However, X-rays are not safe for, or given to, pregnant women unless they have a serious medical condition which requires scanning. If you think you may be pregnant, it is important to tell us before your appointment day.
After your scan, you can go home.
This information is also available on a downloadable patient information sheet. CT Scanning
A CT scanner shines several X-rays through the body at the same time and is used to create very highly detailed images that appear as slices or cross-sections of your body. They can be two or three dimensional. A CT scan is used for the diagnosis and monitoring of a broad range of medical conditions. It is most commonly used to look at organs, bones and the brain.
Firstly, our radiographer will take the time to explain everything to you. The scanner is a large ring shape rather like a giant doughnut. You will be asked to lie down upon a sliding bed which will move slowly in and out of the centre of the scanner. Nothing touches you during the scan but you will hear the scanner working – it produces a whirring noise. The radiographer may ask you to hold your breath for a few seconds, this is completely normal. In some instances it may be necessary for a type of dye called 'contrast medium' to be given as an injection. The dye allows us to see certain parts of the body more clearly. It is completely safe and causes only a warm sensation as it travels around your body.
A CT scan typically takes between 5 and 10 minutes.
Yes, we are happy for a friend or family member to accompany you. However, only in exceptional circumstances do we allow them to accompany you during examination; this is for health and safety reasons.
A CT scan uses multiple X-rays. The risk and radiation associated with the procedure is very low and the procedure is considered suitable for most patients. However, CT scans are not safe for, or given to, pregnant women unless they have a serious medical condition which requires diagnostic imaging. If you think you may be pregnant, it is important to tell us before the day of your appointment.
After your scan, you can go home.
This information is also available on a downloadable patient information sheet. MRI Scanning
MRI is an imaging technique which uses a strong magnetic field to produce high grade pictures of the soft tissues inside your body. Often MRI is used to look at joints, the spine, the brain and the internal organs. The MRI scanner can produce both two and three dimensional images. MRI is more versatile than simple X-rays and is used to examine a large variety of medical conditions.
You will be able to talk to the radiographer throughout the entire examination. They will ask you to lie down upon a comfortable bed which slides through the centre of the MRI scanner. The scanner is shaped like a very short tunnel – it is open on both ends. During the scan, it is recommended that you lie as still as possible. Slight movement or heavy breathing can affect the clarity of the images being produced.
Please be aware that the scanner can be very noisy. Don’t be alarmed, this is completely normal. We will provide you with headphones to protect your ears. This means you may listen to music during the scan if you would like to. How long does an MRI scan take? An MRI scan typically takes around 20 minutes however, depending upon the type of examination it may take longer.
Yes, we are happy for a friend or family member to accompany you. However, only in exceptional circumstances do we allow them to accompany you during examination; this is for health and safety reasons.
MRI scans are generally very safe. There are no side effects and the scan causes no discomfort or pain. However, some people are not able to have an MRI scan. The strong magnetic field created by the scanner can affect metals such as iron, nickel and steel. Before you can have an MRI scan, you will be asked questions about your medical history, operations, allergies and medicines you currently take to make sure the scan is safe for you. MRI scans are not suitable for women who are under 12 weeks pregnant. Some patients may be worried about feeling claustrophobic during the scan - this is fairly common. Our team are used to supporting patients to overcome their worries about a scan and, we find that most patients cope very well. We are more than happy for patients to visit our imaging department to familiarise themselves with the equipment, surroundings and staff before their appointment. Many patients find this is a great way to put their mind at ease. To arrange this please contact us.
After your scan, you can go home.
This information is also available on a downloadable patient information sheet. Ultrasound
Ultrasound scanning uses sound waves to provide an image of the inside of the body. It is often used to look at your internal organs, tendons, muscles and joints. Ultrasound can also be used to show blood flow through the blood vessels/arteries.
Our consultant or sonographer will take the time before your procedure to explain everything to you. You will then be asked to lie down upon a raised bed, normally facing upwards. The lights will be dimmed so that the monitor can be seen clearly and the consultant or sonographer will then apply a clear hypoallergenic gel to the area of your body which requires scanning. During the scan, the consultant or sonographer will move a small sensor across the skin to look at the area from different directions and viewpoints. The images captured are instantly shown upon a screen. You may be asked to hold your breath or to move into different positions, this is completely normal.
Ultrasound is a very straightforward scan. The scan usually takes only 10 – 15 minutes, with the entire appointment lasting approximately 30 – 40 minutes.
Yes, we are happy for a friend or family member to accompany you.
No, the procedure is entirely safe.
Our consultant or sonographer will help you to wipe off the gel which is washable. Your skin may still feel slightly sticky but will soon dry. After this, you can go home.
This information is also available on a downloadable patient information sheet. X-ray
X-rays are commonly used to capture images of bones, joints, the chest and the spine. This is the type of scan that most people are familiar with. An X-ray involves shining a small amount of ionising radiation through the body to produce images on film or screen.
Our radiographer will place you into the correct position ready for your X-ray. You may be asked to lie down on a table, sit down on a chair or to stand in position against a panel. This depends upon which area of the body is being X-rayed. The radiographer may need to touch the area being X-rayed to ensure that it is correctly positioned. Our radiographer will then move behind a screen to switch on the X-ray device. They will step out from behind the screen once the X-ray is complete.
A single X-ray only takes a few minutes however; the radiographer may wish to take more than one X-ray, in different positions.
Yes, we are happy for a friend or family member to accompany you. However, we cannot let them in to the room where you will be examined; this is for health and safety reasons.
X-rays are not safe for, or given to, pregnant women unless they have a serious medical condition which requires diagnostic imaging. If you think you may be pregnant, it is important to tell us before the day of your appointment.
After your X-ray, you can go home.

We accept both medically insured patients and, patients who are self-funding.
If you have medical insurance, you will need to contact your insurance company before your appointment, to ensure that your cover includes diagnostic imaging/radiology services. If you are covered, please bring your insurance membership number and treatment authorisation number with you on the day of your scan. We will do the rest. If your policy includes an excess, you should pay this on the day. If your insurance cover doesn’t include diagnostic imaging/radiology services, you will need to pay for your scan on the day (See Self-funding Patients below). Payment for all services is your responsibility. For this reason it is important that you are clear about what your insurer will/will not pay for.
If you are paying for our services yourself, you should pay on the day of your scan. The cost will include any scanning or imaging performed and the specialist report we will prepare. We accept cash and credit/debit card payments. If you have any further questions, please Contact Us.
